Where?

How much money do you plan to spend?

Do you plan on using a real 1959 Caddy?

first thing u need to ask ur self is are u ready to pay the cost, if ur using a older car around 59 cad u best be ready to pay a arm and leg, it jsut cost my friend 1,750.00 for a front windsheld for his 62 cad, sure ever kid thinks it would be cool to own a ecto 1 or 1a, 1a would cost mroe to build, but unless ur some rich kids son id sugest u wait untill ur older to go ahead with ur plans, ive have done reaserch on almost ever part of the ecto1 for the one im building, and the cost is more then i can even afford right now with paying for colleg and haveing a g/f.

As several folks have already mentioned. Prepare to spend ALOT.

This has been discussed several times here on the board so I'll hit the highlights.

- '59s Cadillacs are hard to find and Expensive to purchase. (You get what you pay for. Buy a Cheap car, expect to Pay even more to make it work right) Buy an Expensive '59, and you will still have to pay a bunch for the gear and repairs and outfitting.

- Parts for '59s are expensive. Alot fo the parts on a '59 Cadillac ambulance are SPECIFIC to ONLY that commercial chassis. You cannot interchange with a '58 or a '60 for example. And there were a limited number produced, so there is a VERY SMALL Parts supply.

- '59 Cadillac Ambulances/Hearses are LOUSY cars to use a daily drivers. They suck gas, and are too big for alot of places. (Make sure you have a normal daily driver)

- Expect to pay between $60,000 and about $150,000 to do a Replica correctly. (Fixing/Replacing all the mechanical problems and making the car safe to drive. Fixing all of the rust problems that the car WILL have. Paint and Body work. Equipment construction. Purchasing and installing Lighting and required electrical upgrades for the lighting. Etc, etc, etc.)

- The LOGOs are Copyright, so if you want to use them on the car, you cant make any money with the car. (Licensing is HUGELY EXPENSIVE and really not an option for a hobby car) Also most sign shops will not do logo for you because they are under copyright.

- There are NO Plans out there for Ecto Replicas that I've found, and I've been looking for years. No one has sat down and drawn up detailed plans like there are for the Proton Packs and traps. IF you want to do a Replica, you are generally on your own. Watch the movies, go frame by frame, sketch out equipment you see. Guesstimate the sized and proportions for the gear. Build it the first time. Watch the movie again, make adjustments to gear on the car to make it "Look" correct. Repeat Process between 5 and 5000 times untill you are happy with the result. There are so few '59s out there to start with, and even few folks with enough time and money to make a replica its almost pointless to take the time to draw up plans..

If you have any specific questions, I have an Ecto-1a replica. Drop me some E-mail and I'll help as much as I can. (I'm not as familiar with the Ecto-1 as that not what my replica is)

Good luck to you bud! Post pictures when you find a car.

Your first problem will be even finding a usable car and if you do will it be in good enough shape to even bother with?
I havent seen a decent caddy for sale that could be used for an ecto in quite a while.
