Welcome to As a new user, you will probably be seeing a lot of me. In this post, I will try to tell you how to survive here at GBN without getting beaten on for being a "newbie" as they call it. Lets start with the basics;

-Posting a New Topic-

More than likely you are going to want to start a post here at GBN. I am however going to persuade you not to, unless extremely necessary. Go through this check list:

1. Is there already a topic about this, or an easy place to find an answer?

Often times there will already be a topic/post of something you are looking for. In this time you are going to find the search feature very useful. Type in some keywords, and find a topic. If there is one which is good, post in it!

2. Is there a better place to find the answer?

There could be, I know there are many sites which are more into a single topic (IE: Props, Ghostbusters II, The Ectomobile.. etc.). Use google, and do a search for it, also check out the links section for a site.

3. Ready to Post, how should I do it?

Well, if you made it here, you found nothing, so it is time to post. When going at this, it is very easy to piss everyone off.

Firstly, you are going to need to find the correct forum to post in. This mistake is made by new users, as well as old users. Don't use the Miscellaneous forum, unless it has nothing to do with any of the other forums topics. (IE. Fav Ghostbusters Quote = Ghostbusters Forum, Fav Movie Quote = Miscellaneous Forum).

Some great tips to follow when posting are: Come up with a very descriptive subject (No "Please Read" or "Help Me" Topics), Don't use all caps (Make sure CAPS Lock is off), Use punctuation (make sure everything is nice and neat, use your best grammar), Don't post things that a lot of people just plain wouldn't like, and lastly, Check your spelling! No one like reading ebonics.

-Most Frequent Posts-

Before you start posting wildly, it's best to get an idea of what has been discussed before. It's always better to revive an old thread with a topic you'd like to discuss than to start a new one (in some cases, starting a new post might be a waste of time as your post may be deleted). You're best bet to to check out this list of Frequent Posts.

-Editing and Deleting Your Posts-

Like most message boards, you are able to edit and Delete your messages. This is an extremely important thing to know when you post duplicates, or make an error in a post. You are going to want to edit it from time to time, and it is really helpful to know how. In every post to the right of a username, and to the right of the date, there is a paper and pencil icon. You can click this, and edit your post. (NOTE: You can only edit your own posts).

-Hey! Where'd my post go?-

Most likely your post was either in the wrong spot (like posting a "Hi, I'm new to the board" in the Ghostbusters area and not the Misc. area) and it was moved or it in some way broke the rules of the board and was deleted. Whenever possible, the moderators will alert people that their thread has moved or that their post is in danger of being removed unless they make some sort of correction. If no attempt is made to rectify the situation, the post will be deleted.

Please in the future, if your topic or post is deleted, don't try to keep posting it or ask "why was my post deleted?" on the board. If it is deleted, that means it does not follow GBN Member Rules. It does say "no questions asked"

Just a thing to look out for, the moderators are hidden in the website. They could be any user, and you will not know if they are or not. There is however one user who posts as the moderator, "The Watcher". Don't talk back to that user, or do anything to get yelled at by that user. It is "the law" in town.

You may notice that everyone has a rank in their profile. This means absolutely nothing, it has nothing to do with how long you have been here, nor how big of a fan you are. You may notice I am a Senior Ghostbuster, this brought me more troubles with users bringing on power problems with me. Don't let it bother you. It means nothing. Read the requirements for each rank, here. I will list what to do to go up in rank now, but remember, if you do things to go up in rank quickly, everyone will look down apon you, and the moderators will possibly delete your stuff.

1. You will notice in the requirements that you need a number of posts, and a number of ratings. Posts can be classified as anything you post on the message board. Even this post now, gives me one more on the post level. This can be found in your profile, click profile in the upper right of your screen.

2. There is also a requirement for rating. These are actually reviews that you do, also found in your profile. You can review almost anything on GBN. Just find somewhere where it says "Rate It", and fill in what you think. You can rate: Props, Prop Plans, Prop Tips, Cartoon Episodes, Action Figures, Websites, Fan Fiction and a few others. When rating things, be fair and honest. Don't be an ass, basically if it is a fan made item, most things deserve a good rating.

That is it, but play it safe. A high rank doesn't give you privileges, respect, authority, or make you escape from your Newbism.

The best way to escape your newbism, or to not make yourself look like a complete jerk, is to have a level of respect. Not for people who have been around for a long time, or people with a high rank, but for all users. If you want people to like you, show them some respect, and they will respect you. Don't go calling someone an idiot, or insult someone, you may never know, they could be Dan Aykroyd, or have an IQ of 200. You'll never know.

-Actors Names-

A typical mistake you may make is on the spelling of the actors names. The most commonly mispelled names in Ghostbusters is Dan Aykroyd, and Sigourney Weaver, just try to memorize them now, and you won't have problems. I have put together this list with the accurate spelling to help you along.

Dan Aykroyd - Dr. Raymond Stantz (Spelled Stanz in one episode of RGB)
Harold Ramis - Dr. Egon Spengler
Bill Murray - Dr. Peter Venkman
Ernie Hudson - Winston Zeddemore
Sigourney Weaver - Dana Barrett / Zuul / Gate Keeper
Rick Moranis - Louis Tully / Vinz Clortho / Key Master
Annie Potts - Janine Melnitz

Lorenzo Music - Peter Venkman (1st, 1986-1987)
Dave Coulier - Peter Venkman (2nd, 1987-1991)
Arsenio Hall - Winston Zeddemore (1st, 1986-1987)
Buster Jones - Winston Zeddemore (2nd, 1987)
Maurice LaMarche - Egon Spengler
Frank Welker - Ray Stantz /Slimer
Laura Summer - Janine Melnitz (1st, 1986-1987)
Kath Soucie - Janine Melnitz (2nd, 1987-1991)
Rodger Bumpass - Louis Tully

-What kind of car is Ecto-1?-

It is a 1959 Miller Meteor Cadillac Combination Hearse/Ambulance.

-Song On Bridge-

The song they play on the bridge is from the score of Ghostbusters by Elmer Bernstein. It is track 13, called "Peter Arrives / I am Zuul / Myth". It is approx 8:22 minutes into the song. The song as it appears in the movie is available at under the audio section.

-Song When Containment Unit Blows-

When the containment unit blows the song playing is Magic by Mick Smiley. Don't be confused by the first part of the song, it starts out with some singing, then 2:18 into the song, it starts that great part played in Ghostbusters. It is on the Ghostbusters soundtrack, track 7.

-Ghostbusters 2 Score-

Ghostbusters 2 did have a score, but unfortuantly, it was never released to the public, or in any form.

-What's the episode with the old uniforms?!-

You are thinking of the most commonly asked about Real Ghostbusters episode, Citizen Ghost, describing the events after the first movie explaining how Slimer saved the guys lives and came to live with them. Peter forgets to burn the old uniforms leaving them next to a crack in the containment unit. Green ghost clones of the Ghostbusters appear with one goal, to destroy the Real Ghostbusters and replace them!

-Where are the episodes on this site?-

One of the many member benefits of is being able to watch streaming episodes of RGB and EGB online. Just go to an episode(or search for its title) and click "Watch This Episode" to view. If you do not see this, it means it's not available yet. Not all episodes can be watched, but the vast majority are there. They will all be up in due time.

If you're wondering, the sound and picture quality of the episodes is not a problem with your player or computer, it is simply the way the episodes are. The quality of the episodes has been debated many times(it would be a major expense) and we should be lucky to be able to watch them at all.

However if you are looking for episodes to download to your computer, you should check out KaZaA or MIRC file sharing programs.

To bump is to bring a post to the top. Do this by posting a reply, the topic is then bumped to the top to become noticable. Do Not do this for attention, I don't recommend doing this at all.

-I think there should be a GB Chatroom!-

You can find the info on the official chat info in this article Download New GB Chat Software Official Ghostbusters Chats occur every night @ 8pm eastern standard time.

As well, now features it's own, web-based chatrooms. When you are logged in, in the top right corner of the page, you will see your welcome and a link to the chat area of the site.

-Where can I get/buy?-

If you missed out on a piece of merchandise back in the day, your best bet is to look on EBAY. As well, you might want to post on the Marketplace message board, were you might find someone selling what you're looking to buy.

-Ghostbusters Sims?-

A number of fans have worked on creating Ghostbuster and Real Ghostbuster skins and objects for The Sims, by Maxis. Please check out these links before you go posting anything new.

-Can you make me a Pack/PKE/Other?-

If you are wishing to buy a replica from the movie, it is best that you post in the market place or in the props forum. Please make sure you are offering a reasonable amount. Selling props is illegal, so don't come crying to me if you get arrested. Common prices for items are:

Proton Pack: $1500 - $500 Dollars
Ghost Trap: $200 - $500
PKE Meter: $500
Uniforms: $200 - $400

Just because something is small, doesn't mean it is cheap to make. This is a common mistake for lots of people. Also, no one will sell you any "good looking" prop for "$69.99" so don't try.

For more Prop Info, check out Ghostbusters Prop Archive.

-They referenced Ghostbusters on...!-

Ghostbusters is a legitimate pop culture phenomenon, and frequently crops up in the unlikeliest of places, such as;

-The Simpsons (a number of references)
-A celebrity's t-shirt

...and so on. If you've just spotted a reference and want to talk about it on the board, please check to see that someone hasn't already posted a thread about it. With so many GB fans out there, scores of people often see the same reference at the same time and we don't want dozens of posts about the same thing. If it's an older reference (like you've just seen The Simpsons episode where they reference it), it's probably already been discussed a great deal. If you have anything to add, please don't post a new thread, but search for an older thread and revive that one.

-Ghostbusters Convention-

Every once and awhile, people get excited about the idea of having a Ghostbusters convention. The best way to get a lot of people talking about this is to find an older post and revive it - starting a new thread will usually only result in lots of people replying, "I already started a thread about this ages ago." instead of posting about the convention (which is what you really want to talk about). The following threads are your best bet;

I so want to have a GB convention it's not even funny!
Ghostbusters Convention Idea-What do ya' think?
Ghostbusters Convention
I have an idea! *rant alert*
Ghostbusters Convention Ideas
Has there ever been a Ghostbusters convention held?

-I have a complaint!-

If you have a problem with another board member, you're encouraged to work it out, outside of the board. Flame wars are ugly and spoil the generally fun mood of the place. Anybody stirring up trouble is subject to having their posts deleted.

If you have a problem with the board and its functionality, you can either on the Site Suggestions board.

If all else fails, you can try contacting Chad personally. Chad is a busy guy, so don't take it personally if he doesn't get back to you right away (or at all, if it's a problem he can fix quickly).

I would have prefered to add this to the main body of the FAQ, but due to strange board technical issues, every time the FAQ gets updated, the link template would have to be retyped - that's a major pain, so instead I'll post where it will cause no trouble.

Mods: Please don't edit or add to this post, or it will erase the special formatting of the link template. Thanks.

-How to add links to your posts.-

A lot of times in a post you'd like to direct readers to another website. Most time you can just copy the website's URL and paste it into your post. Other readers can then copy it and paste it into their browser to visit it, but that's a bit of pain.

Adding working web links to your post is really simple. Here's the template you can use for a basic web link;

<A HREF="PUT_YOUR_LINK_HERE">Put the linked text here</A>

So, for example, if you wanted to link to, it would look like this;

<A HREF=""> rules!</A>

That's all there is too it. Copy and paste this template into your post. Replace your URL in the appropriate place and change the text you want people to see linked however you want.

-Is RGB currently on TV?-

No, as of right now no one plays the Real Ghostbusters on TV.

-I remember another GB with a gorilla. HELP!-

Known to many people as the "Fake Ghostbusters", Ghostbusters starring Larry Storch and Forrest Tucker of F-Troop fame aired in 1975. Go to Proton Charging under Filmation's Ghostbusters for the best info on the show as well as the theme songs. Many people remember the cartoon with the ape, the talking car and the fat guy with the pilots hat. The cartoon derived from the series was released in 1986 to run against The Real Ghostbusters but never really caught on. It features Jake and Eddie(sons of Kong and Spencer) time travelling, wacky adventures and they almost always battled Prime Evil and his goofy gang of ghosts with the dematerializer. A good majority of the people here hate Filmation's Ghostbusters(FGB for short) with a passion and though there are fans of the show here, mention of it is generally frown upon and will likely be deleted to avoid those arguments for or against the show.

-Problems watching episodes!?-

If you downloaded RGB/EGB episodes from Kazaa, the player from is needed to view them. Otherwise the episodes will be just sound, no picture.

-GB References-

castewar covered it but I'll try to throw in all the GB references in other shows/movies I can think of. It is safe to say the general community is aware of any and all major and minor references you may have to report. Chances are you saw a rerun of a show that's reference has been pointed out many times and sometimes people are easily irritable about these and will be quick to jump on you if it has been posted. tongue Here are some references that are currently the most mentioned and are very much known about.

Dexter's Lab
Rocko's Modern Life
Angry Beavers
Johnny Bravo
Family Guy
The Simpsons
The Critic
Lizzie McGuire
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Saturday Night Live
Late Night with Conan O'Brien
The O'Reilly Factor
What Lies Beneath
The Man Who Knew Too Little

I know this whole thread is a lot to read but I promise, it is worth it to have the information to know how and why things are done a certain way. If every member(new and old) reads and understands this, the member rules and the topics that are frequently talked about, you won't have any problem fitting in and being accepted. smile

Also customizing your profile pic, avatar and signatures in your profile are also encouraged so you won't become just another "anonymous face in the crowd" passing by. This is one good way to escape the dreaded newbism and be noticed in a positive way without having to start a million new topics.

Citizen Ghost is the RGB episode in my avatar/signature/profile pic, so please don't ask! ;)

-How to Add Basic HTML formatting to Your Posts.-

Sometimes you want to add certain effects to your posts. The GB Message boards allows for the use of certain, basic HTML tags to achieve this. These should not be abused, or you may find your post deleted without warning. Usage suggestions are included below;

‹b›Whatever you want bold‹/b›
Whatever you want bold
For emphasis, especially proper nouns.

‹i›Whatever you want italicized‹/i›
Whatever you want italicized
For movie and TV titles, such as Ghostbusters the movie (but not Ghostbusters, the guys). FYI, italics aren't used for song or book titles, which are capitalized in quotes (ie "Cleanin' Up the Town") and just capitalized (ie Making Ghostbusters), respectively.

‹u›Whatever you want underlined‹/u›
Whatever you want underlined
For emphasis.

Nesting is when you use multiple formating tags on the same piece of text. Nesting refers to keeping them orderly, like those little Russian dolls within dolls within dolls - Tags should be arranged by pairs within tags, within tags, etc.

For example;
‹i›‹b›‹u›Egon and Janine Forever!!!‹/i›‹/b›‹/u› should come out...

Egon and Janine Forever!!!

Note to mods: just as above with the links tutorial, please don't edit this post or you will erase the special formatting. Thanks.

-How to Add a profile pic, an Avatar, and sig picture to your posts.-

When you log-in, you'll see a profile button on the top right of the screen, underneath "Welcome, (your name)" Click on it to enter your profile. At the top of your profile is a link that reads, "edit your profile!" Click on this.

Here you can add a bio about yourself, links to any website you like, ways to contact you, and you can add an avatar picture (like the one I have to the left of this post) and a signature picture (like the one at the bottom of this post).

You can make you avatars and sig pictures whatever you want, within reason (offensive images are subject to removal and the poster banned from the boards, so choose wisely).

You images can be in any of the following formats;

gif, jpeg, jpg, or bmp

Profile pics should be 200 pixels by 200 pixels, signature pics are 350 by 50, and avatar pics should be 70 by 70 at a resolution of 72 or 96 dpi. You can do them at other resolutions, but the file must be smaller than 50k or it will not be accepted.

Once you have finished making your images, all you need to do is upload them to You'll see a browse button which will allow you to explore your local machine until you find the image file you want to upload. Select it and then press the Upload Image button. A few seconds later the image will be stored in and will appear automatically in your profile or in all your posts (even old ones).

As for making the images themselves, it's up to you to either make them yourself or find someone nice enough to help you make one. Some board members are nice enough to make avatars and sig files for you if you ask nicely.
