haven't seen a MAKING GB thread on GBN in a while, so i thought with all the new members it would make a fun discussion. i haven't read it in a while, and decided to look at it some today. it seems as though without the script, it would be a VERY short book. when i look at "making of" books such as SPIDER-MAN: BEHIND THE MASK and other such as BLADE RUNNER, MAKING GB seems to be slim on material. of course, it totally makes up for this with pics of art, sets, and actors. of all, i REALLY wish it had color photos.

anyway, what are your favorite parts of the book? i LOVE the excerpts from previous script drafts, especially the earlier ending. also, those of you who have spoken with me know i totally LOVE conceptual art. i even collect as much as i can get my hands on.... i LOVE the art in the book. my fav is probably the ecto goggle comcept or the concepts for what dana saw in her 'fridge.

what are your thoughts and comments on the "ghostbusters bible"?

d_osborn,

Nice post, I like the direction you're going with it! Anyway, to answer the presented question, I think "Making Ghostbusters" is just great, and is a book that no true Ghostbusters fan should be without! I agree about the substantial lack of color in the book, but even though it's pretty much all black and white the information found therein is good enough on its own to enjoy! I've had it for a while now, and it seems I learn something new about the film everytime I pick it up - it's that rich in information! Like all things, I'm sure it could've been better, but I am just grateful that it was made. So, if you Ghostbusters fans are going to treat yourself to any new GB material soon, let it be "Making Ghostbusters"; you won't be dissapointed. wink

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other,

For me, it's the pinnacle of all GB knowledge on the first movie! Do any other other specific GB books exist like this? A GB2 one would have been great. It's presented very well I thought. Other than the GB DVD, this is what you want to own. It has all the stuff that has become lore within the online GB community. You'll often hear people make reference to things in this book from time to time.

The content is more than sufficient for me. I still find myself flipping throughout or to check on something. It's hard to imagine knowing everything I know now without having read it. I honestly don't think I would! Even more stuff would always be great but as a GB fan, this is the book you need to go to the next level and step up the fandom a notch. More is always better but this will do! tongue

My favorite things are the hotel storyboards, the office ghost(wink) and the different incarnations of Stay Puft. Not to mention all the little stories from people involved.

Zack

Making Ghostbusters

You can read the essay from the opening of the book and see the cover and some pics of the book there. I've found that Bill's Ghostbusters Homepage has info from the book. A lot of it is on the Internet. A lot of stuff everyone has probably seen by now. The Tricks and Trivia? info that comes up on the GB DVD is from a lot of notes in the book and the storyboards and still photos and concept characters and drawings and stuff can be seen on various parts of the DVD.

The DVD extras are the next best thing to the book as I think its becoming harder to find. I remember I was lucky enough to have Books-A-Million track down a copy(I think it was around $25-30?) but that was at least a few years ago now. I think eBay is the best bet now but it can get pricey. sad

Hey guys,

Just thought of something that we can add to this thread to help out our fellow "Ghostheads" if they plan on picking up "Making Ghostbusters" soon. Well, what I thought of was that we not only post our thoughts and comments on the book, but also list how much we bought if for so that way people know, if they're buying the book, whether they're getting a good deal or not. Oh, and putting the year you acquired the book would be helpful also.

So, I'll go ahead and be one of the first...I received my copy of "Making Ghostbusters" for a little over $50 from one of my good friends here at GBN in 2002, I believe. Before I finally got it, I did extensive searching for what would be the best price and saw that most of them were going for $50-$100 at the time I checked. Maybe they're even more on eBay now because you know how that bidding process works. Anyway, it's a great book and I hope that everyone get the privilege to own their own copy one day. Like Zack and others have mentioned, it truly is a must-read for any true GB-fan!

Until next time, take care of yourself and each other,

-"The Voice of Reason" wink

There are two important things to remember about Making Ghostbusters. The first is that in 1984, Making Of... books for movies were very uncommon, so the fact that there is a book looking behind the scenes of Ghostbusters is a huge deal.

The other thing to remember is that it was written by Don Shay, editor of Cinefex magazine. The Ghostbusters issue of Cinefex is like a companion to the Making Ghostbusters book, as it covers a large amount of behind the scenes special effects materials. So if the Making Ghostbusters book seems a little light, it's because Shay was holding some of his research in reserve for his magazine.

If you can find a copy of either, it's well worth the money.
