Some of you may have followed my comments in the thread RGB Truly Canon with the Movies?, where some of us have been debating some of the vagarities of Ghostbusters continuity. Dr. Spectrum, Brian-Reilly, and especially my Great Friend Doc Ryedale have been especially helpful in this. Trying to reconcile all of the at times conflicting material is at the heart of a little project I've been working on off and on for almost five years (the first versions being written when Extreme Ghostbusters was still fresh in my mind.)

I call it the Ghostbusters Omnibus Timeline, and I've recently finished converting it to html and am in the process of creating a home for it. But until it's ready, let me share the basic outline of the events of the movies and both animated series...

1983--Year One
The events of GB1 occur.
It flies against the common assumption that GB1 "happens" in 1984, but this way the battle with Gozer can occur and be optioned for cinematic treatment.

1984--Year Two
The Events of RGB Season One and about half the Syndicated episodes occur
RGB Season One is set in 1984 due to "Take Two": the Ghostbusters are seen participating in the filming and premiere of GB1

1985--Year Three
The events of the second half of the syndicated RGB episodes and Season Two occur

1986--Year Four
The events of RGB Season Three

Several lawsuits, some having meandered in court since the Gozer crisis of 1983, come to bear all at once and the Ghostbusters accept an injunction against acting as paranormal investigators. Egon returns to research, Venkman becomes host of World of the Psychic, Ray opens an occult book shop, and he and Winston begin to appear at kids parties in Ghostbuster costume

1988--Year Six
The events of GB2 occur late in the year (the battle with Vigo technically ends on Jan 1, 1989). NOw's RGB#1-2 occur "during" GB2
Five years after GB1, one of the few actual dating references in the Ghostbuster canon. I've moved the comic stories back some, as they actually include dates

1989--Year Seven
The events of RGB Season Four and Now's RGB#3-19 occur.

1990--Year Eight
The events of RGB Season Five and Now's RGB#20-28 occur.

1991--Year Nine
the events of RGB Season Six and Now's RGB Vol.2 occur

Late in 1991 or in 1992 the Ghostbusters again break up, apparently quite abruptly and acrimoniously. Venkman goes to Hollywood and tries to shop around a concept for GB3, but the project dies when he and Dan Aykroyd can't convince Bill Murray to come aboard. Ray becomes a used car salesman in Colorado. Winston becomes a commuter pilot in Montana. Egon becomes a teacher, and watches over the Containment Unit.

1997--Year Fifteen
The events of XGB occur.

And yes, yes, I know most of you hate XGB. Just end the timeline after Year Nine/1991 then...but my goal was to be as inclusive as possible. Not to say that there weren't problems...but for the most part I weigh most problems by these standards:

1. The Core Continuity is defined by GB1 and RGB Season One, the latter with preference to the works of series developer and story editor J. Micheal Straczynski. These offer the purest visions of the concept, and most would agree they were the creative peak of the property.

2. If a character or charactorization from a later season of RGB, XGB, or even GB2 conflicts with the Core Continuity, it is eligible to be ruled Invalid. Examples would include: the "Duh, Gee Slimer Little Buddy" version of Venkman, Professor Dweeb, the Junior Ghostbusters, Janine as Desperate Slut, or Janine and Louis Tully as a genuine "item". If a conflict is resolved or explained within the stories themselves, it will usually be allowed to stand (ie Janine as Mommy Figure, explained by "Janine, You've Changed"--and admittedly, being written by JMS gives it extra weight)

3. Conflicting elements of Core Continuity are judged with as much care to both as possible. It is the judgement of this writer, for example, that due to the examples of "Citizen Ghost" and "Take Two", that the Ghostbusters wear the same proton packs in the movies and the cartoons, even though they look different--it's just an interpretive matter. It is also assumed that the nametags are present at all times, just not "noticed" (they are not seen in "Citizen Ghost" on the grey uniforms, and we know they're really there. A Season Four episode, "Elementary. My Dear Winston" offers confirmation of this theorem). Obviously, when a conflict is explained, the explaination stands ("Citizen Ghost" explains the difference in uniform colors and the Containment Unit, for example)

For Fanfic writers, the Timeline can offer two possibilites:

1. Literal Time. If you want to write your story just after the events of the RGB TV series, you say "Well, it's 1991. Let me look up some articles from 1991 to get some ideas for topical jokes"

2. Relative Time. Under the same circumstance, you could say "Well, it's Year Nine, but let's say it's 2003 so I can make current topical jokes" Meaning in your Relative Time universe the Ghostbusters formed in 1995. **Caugh caugh** A 2003 as Year One approach could form the basis of a reboot of the whole concept... somebody should try that **caugh caugh**

Well, rather people like XGB or not. It was still a part of the Ghostbusters. Like it or not, it's part of the timeline. They'll just have to get over it.

Great work mon! But there really is something I feel uncormfrotable with... I may ahve said this before, but I don't like the idea of so much emphesis being placed on the Take Two eps where the RGBs go to see the OGB movie... Ghostbusters will always be for me the four guys that look like Dan, Bill, Harold and Ernie! They aparked tje magic, and thats how it will stay for me... I look on RGB as a little piece of entertainment but nothing important when it comes to the GB series, it has so many problems with the films, that I just discount it!

I Honestly would like t simply think that in the film GB Universe, a TV co who were present at the Gozer event merely decided to abse a cartoon of them... and thats how we get the RGB, a losely based docu-toon! Because face it, it is possible to believe practiaclly everything in the movies... but when you get down tom the cartoons, half the stuff in that is unbelievable to an incredible extent!

But criticism,= aside, you have acheived a great peiece of work, congratulations!

Sinister makes a good point or two as always. I guess I have to admit I ultimately disagree with him, but we can at least agree to civilly disagree, I hope.

Good grief, I just hope you are all as excited once you actually see the finished product... smile

*Hands Veedramon a plate of Dr. Egon Spengler Spaghetti*

Veedramon, My Great Friend, I'm glad to hear about this. I'm very exited about it. It's VERY important to sort out Ghostbusters Continuity, Facts about the Ghostbusters and their equipment (Hence, THE GHOSTBUSTERS FACT LIST.), and even the correct spelling of certain names and/or words. I always do everything possible to prevent errors in continuity and Facts (Once again, hence,THE GHOSTBUSTERS FACT LIST.).

And while I'm thinking about it, The Ghostbusters Fact List has still got a ways to go, before it's complete. I'm still searching the Internet for valuable bits of info, that would come in handy in it. I've found some very interesting things on Sheila Paulsen's RGB Fan Page, that we could/should use.

Here's the FACTS about the Equipment on RGB, that Veedramon mentioned: In the RGB Universe (Which is what REALLY happened. wink ), everyone saw all of the equipment (except for the Ecto Containment Unit and the Multicolored Jumpsuits, which DID have the nametags, which remain true to RGB, b/c they were explained in Citizen Ghost.) as being exactly identical to the live-action Movie equipment, while audiences watching at home saw them differently, on account of the designs being simplified for the quickness and easiness for the animators to draw/color. So the RGB's DID use equpment identical to the live-action movie equipment. This is basically the same principle/theory behind the nametag issue. Also, in Take Two, we see the RGB's equipment's movie prop counterparts, which are exactly identical to the RGB equipment, that the Guys use. The Guys leave their real equipment in a storage room, and go off. The Prop Master comes in with the Prop Proton Packs, and sees the real 4 Proton Packs already there. He thinks that they're just props, and only 4 are needed, so he takes the real ones away. The Guys come back later, and confuse the Props with the real Proton Packs! And of course we've all seen the movie, and the equipment, so we know what the props looked like. smile smile smile wink

Still working on it...I just spent the last two hours debugging a code I'd spliced wrong and made little boxes with "x"s in them appear instead of the graphics I wanted...my birthday's Tuesday (May 13), so I hope to have it ready to visit by then (I've got both of my fanfics posted on GBN on the site also, as well as one XGB prelude; I have more stories written, but they're still in Word format right now. They'll be posted as I get them converted to HTML)

As always, I have to stress that my timeline is an interpretation, not a Holy Writ Set In Stone. I have no special relationship with Aykroyd, Ramis, JMS, or anybody connected to the show. It's an interpretation founded, as I've said, in using all of the available material as much as possible. Others might have other interpreations, ranging from "I like the rest of it but XGB didn't happen" all the way to "only the movies count, all the rest of it's questionable". And those interpretations are just as valid as mine

In reference to Doc's mention of Shiela Paulson: Well, of course I've visited her site, and read some great stuff there. (I haven't been in a little while...the frequent "Egon gets hurt and Venkman angsts about it for thirty pages" stories just aren't my cup of tea) but Shiela is the Fan Fic Guru, and I don't disregard her work: most of the parents' names I mention are taken from her stories, and mentioned as such. The only parent who's name is established is Winston's dad, Edward ("Brooklyn Triange"), but Charlie Venkman's name is practically canon... tongue

I just hope some of my gyrations on Egon and Ray's geneology, trying to reconcile some quite different accounts, meets with Doc Ryedale's approval wink

Okay, gang...time for me to put up or shut up as it were...now online, debugged, and ready to be utterly picked apart...

The Ghostbusters Omnibus Timeline

It's not for the faint of heart, as it runs over 200K and sixty pages printed but I wanted to be thorough: as I've mentioned before, my template was Micheal and Denise Okuda's Star Trek Chronology, and they stuffed that thing full! I tried to put in at least a line or two about every episode featured in the Timeline, though some will be longer than others.

(Though generally episodes I liked had longer descriptions, this isn't always the case: a few synopsis of episodes I didn't particullarly care for are long because I saw them on Fox Family a few years back and I wrote the plot fresh in my mind. Conversely, there's a lot of Season Four-Six episodes I haven't seen since they came out, and actually just spliced in the story recaps from here or Shiela Paulson's site)

I admit in advance I've probably made an error or two--one of the reasons I started this thread!!! My little document isn't perfect and never will be but I hope you'll help me make it better by posting your comments--good and bad--onto this thread.

Let the fun begin, and thanks to you all!

smile smile smile

WOW! Absolutely incredible! Just finished reading it, and I'm sbsolutely stunned! I never thought, until I found this thread, that all the parts of the GB world could be put together so well. Of course I'm jealous that I wasn't the one to do this... smile I especially loved the possible futures for the guys and Janine. btw, I remember the letters to NOW you mentioned. I just have to find my books to reread them. Is this the final version, or is there still more to come? *bows down in humble supplication*

Thank, everybody!!!

As I say above, I will continue to revise the Timeline as things go along. Like just this morning it popped into my head about Janine winning a TV on a game show ("Station Identification") and couldn't remember if they said how old she was at the time. (My computer is on dial-up, and can't seem to handle the streamers from this site. And I haven't found my tape with this episode on it yet!) Or the year of the real world haunting that involved the name "Gozer", which as we all know from the GB1 DVD inspired the name of the movie villain. I'd put that in there too...

And as always any speculations about the future are just that, speculations. Absent an official future (GB3 being completed and released) I feel a little license to go wild. (Anybody else enjoy the allusion to the real world in Venkman's conjectural present?) By the way, I have to credit the idea of "Eduardo as last XGB on the team" to egb fan, inspired by her story "After Graduation"...and Victor Irwin is the conjectural full name of Janine's nephew, seen in "Janine's Day Off" and mentioned in "Victor the Happy Ghost". Just trying to keep it in the family some...

I love the sight! One thing though, maybe it is just me but the font size you used makes everything a little hard to read. If you could increase the size of the letters it would help alot.
You should send a link for your site to Edgar Governo
Historian of Things That Never Were at, http://www.mts.net/~arphaxad/history.html

His site has alot of links to timelines for tv shows, movies, books, comics, etc.
