OK. I know someone here knows this. I read on another website that George Barris, king of the car customizers, built the Ecto-1. The Star Cars Museum site credits the car to him, but I'm sure I would have heard this before now. Did he or didn't he? If he didn't, does anyone know who did?

Okay i think i can help you out here. Barris DID NOT build The Actual Ectomobiles. with calls down to barris kustoms and several emails to custom cadillac enthusiasts everywhere i recived this:
"I must tell you that I had a similar respect for the King of Kustoms,
however Mr. Barris attempted some inappropriate legal manuevers against
my company which ultimately backfired. What I discovered about Mr.
Barris in my quandry was that he takes credit for everyone elses work in
Hollywood. Yes he has done some cool cars but because he shouts the loudest people
presume that what he says must be fact. I know that he created a copy
of "Ecto-1" (Gattlinburg) not "the" Ecto-1" but due to his long time
habits of self promotion, I thing he really believes he was the
driving force behind this car as well as "The Monkeemobile, Black Beauty and
assorted others. It's sad in a way, however Hollywood is all about smoke
and mirrors."
-from ECTO-135's ECTO-INFO section.
in other words all he did is over-see the construction of the TN Ecto-1 replica. the actual creators of the Ectomobiles from the GB serials had no influence from Barris in the least. G. Barris is nothing more than a legend for a one hit wonder, the batmobiles. thats it. to add the original batmobile was a concept car by ford i believe. all he did is paint it up and add some nick nacks here and there. im not sure about his further involvements with the batmobiles to follow, either way hes all hot air outside of batman.
im gone.

well, part of that information is correct, back. actually, the gatlinburg, tn replica was built by a man named peter mosen. it was started in september 1988, and completed that december. the base '59 was purchased in ohio, and taken back to his shop in california. columbia pictures hired mosen as an "official" ghostbuster to tour the country in his replica, visiting hospitals, orphanages, shopping centers, etc. mosen and his near exact replica was featured in a 1989 issue of car craft magazine, which i had with my while i looked over the tn replica. EVERYTHING matches, from the style equipment in the back to dan aykroyd's signature on the cab headliner. from the front upholstery to a red paint rub on one of the back jumper seats. from the.... well, you get the point. although the car carried the barris logo on the front fender, i'm fairly sure it was NOT built my him. if you want to see a barris built ECTO replica, see the 1/1A hybrid that was auctioned off from florida a few months ago. THAT was a barris replica....
as for THE original ectomobile, it was designed and built by steve dane.
