My guess is anywhere between late August to mid November. Within the movie there is clearly fall scenery, and people can be seen wearing light coats for possibly chilly days, buy not down right cold like in winter. Also, shooting outside in NYC was during October if I recall, so it does seem to be around there; my opinion, late Oct.

Well it was probably shot in January or so of 1984 so hope that helps ... But anyways the movie is set in the fall of 84 and was shot in NYC October-November of 83 so that should help...

Probably about 1-2 months before. . .they obviously gained popularity by the time the movies ends, with shirts being made, etc, but were still working on Dana's case, so maybe the Gozer bust was more early/mid Nov., and they had opened business around late Aug/early Sept/maybe even early Oct. There are students on campus in the beginning, enough to seem like a full semester was taking place, so summer seems too early, plus taking into account the weather, etc.

It's hard to believe that a movie that's so fast paced takes place over such a long period of time.

I think the whole thing takes place in a few months, but of course that's just my guess. I'd say it's set in the fall (convenient, since that's when it was shot ) and the film ends with the fall, too....like November. Say, September, they go into business. Then in a few weeks, they become really popular, and then they get their big chance to save the world.
Just my speculation anyway.

unless there is a LOT of time passed over during the start-up of the business (which is possible), the time frame of the movie is pretty short. keep in mind the time between when louis tells dana about his party, and the actual party, which takes place the night of the final bust...

There are several contraditions to dating details inside the movie, so it's hard to pin down. DaneGhostbuster once observed that the first scenes are probably in May or June, as most likely Ray, Egon, and Venkman were fired at the end of the spring symester. Louis talks about his party early on as though it would be soon. Venkman makes a date with Dana for "Thursday", presumably less than a week later. But it would've taken time to build the Containment Unit and proton packs, not to mention getting the firehouse semi-livable and remodelling the ECTO-1. Then we have Winston telling the mayor he'd been with the company for "a few weeks" And remember that the team had time to become famous, so yeah, my own guess is most of the movie happens probably in August and/or Sepetember.
(And there IS a school of thought that says the battle with Gozer actually took place in 1983, around the time the movie was filmed in Real Life...for one thing, there is a banner flying in one scene mentioning September 1983)

What can you say, production on the movie was rushed... All NYC scenes were all shot probably in a week so everything in the movie looks like the fall... And obviously they couldn't have fixed up the firehouse, the ecto made the pack, the CU and all that jazz in a few weeks so how knows... Chalk it up to tiny plot hole...
