Ok, this may not get an overwhelmingly positive response, but I've come up with a theory concerning the actions of everybody's favorite villian in the 1st film.

Its our senior year and in English we've been taking a film course for the last 2 semesters. As such, for the last film, we got to select the movie we would study next with all of our new-found appreciation for the art.

That film was "American History X". Needless to say, the teacher got a bit freaked out by it, so he suggested that we watch another film - he specifically asked for comedies.

So, what did I do? Take a guess.

I brought my PS2 into school for a week and now we're studying - yep, you guessed it - GHOSTBUSTERS in a film course!

Actually, you'd be surprised how much technique is used in the film... Ivan Reitman is a really talented director. Since I've taken this film course, I have a whole new appreciation for how great the Ghostbusters series is.

But thats besides the point. Anyway, my buddy and I were discussing the movie after class while at work. I suddenly came up with an interesting theory. Excuse me if this has been brought up before, but...

Did Peck have a choice in his actions, or was he being controlled by Gozer? Or maybe controlled by fate?

I submit that when Peck ordered the containment grid to be shut down, he was, in fact, being controlled by outside forces. The containment grid *HAD* to have been shut down. There's no way it could have been prevented. And here's why.

Ivo Shandor, that aesthetic whacko and amatuer surgeon, contructed Dana's apartment building with the intention of collecting psychokinetic energy and using it to bring Gozer into the realm of man. Once the building was complete, he topped it off with a bunch of crazy rituals and rites.

Skip ahead a few decades to 1984, and theres enough energy gathered in one spot (NYC) to start to form cracks inbetween our world and that of the nether regions. Certain spirits can roam back and forth freely. Ghosts are all over now, because they've been set loose in our world. Thats why the Ghostbusters suddenly pick up in business - ghosts were so rare before that there wasn't a market for paranormal investigation and elimination.

These spirits are in fact soldiers - or at least denizens of Gozer and the nether world. One by one their errant energies are collected by - you guessed it - the Ghostbusters. Their energy is then concentrated in the containment unit - in one place.

Meanwhile, Gozer sends her two minions - Zuul and Vinz Clortho - to Earth to prepare for her coming. Gozer is too powerful a being to simply manifest itself physically. It would take a great deal of psychokinetic energy to bring her into our world.

Zuul and Vinz arrive on earth in gargoyle form. As such, they cannot mate. So they assume human form through possession.

Unfortunately for them, they are separated and are trying desperately to get back together. It is during the sequence when Vinz is running around the city that we learn that they are awaiting a sign - he specifically mentions that the prisoners will be freed.

Whoa - wait a minute. How did Vinz know about the prisoners? He has little to no concept of humans, and thus would not understand what it was the Ghostbusters were doing. The only explanation is that Gozer told him to await the sign - when the prisoners were freed. This means that Gozer KNEW that the Ghostbusters would capture the spirits that leaked through, and KNEW that they would gather them in one place! She knew all of this and used it to her advantage. In fact, it was integral to her plan of invasion!

Gozer KNEW that the spirits would be gathered in one place. Vinz KNEW that they would be released - which means Gozer knew too. And the only way to stop the Ghostbusters, as we all know is to... da da da dum... Call in the bureaucrats (i.e. PECK!!)!!

Gozer knew that the spirits would be released. This means one of three things:

A) Peck was going to shut down the containment grid cuz, yes, its true, this man has no dick or

B) It was fate that led Peck to shut down the grid or

C) Peck's actions were IN FACT being controlled (whether he knew it or not) by Gozer!

If "C" is the correct assumption, then that throws a whole new theory into play - were the Ghostbusters, in effect, being controlled by Gozer as well? Its like the Matrix Reloaded. All about control.

You've come this far down the rabbit hole - follow me further.

Gozer needed a sign as a signal to Vinz and Zuul to get it on and combine their psychokinetic energies to open the gate so that she could enter our world. Additionally, she needed the combined energies of all of the captured spirits to help the process along. So when their was enough of them gathered up, all she had to do was hit the switch and faster than you can say two in the box ready to go she's in corporeal form.

Peck was just a puppet. And, quite possibly, so were the boy's in the surplus air force jumpsuits.

Anybody see this too?

I would have to agree with you. You bring up some fantastic points. However, I doubt Peck was being controlled by Gozer. Yet I do believe that his actions were already prempted and Gozer knew of these actions as did Ivo Shandor. So yes I believe fate with some help from Gozer and Ivo Shandor played an extrodinary part in the releasing of the spirits.

Nice way to look at things.

It's a fun idea, but probably not true.

Reitman awlays has authorities as the bad guy, and if Peck was controlled by Gozer it just wouldn't be his style.

Like the way you think. Props to your teacher for letting you study the film. Wish I could have done that (but then I graduated in 1978, so...).
