Did they REALLY 'Save the World'?

Everyone talks about how in both Ghostbusters movies they 'saved the world' .. but really, i mean, just HOW much trouble would a 100ft Marshmellow Man and a walking un-dead Carpathian cause the world? I'm sure the Army would dispose of the Stay Puft without breaking out into a sweat .. and im sure Vigo could be easily wacked . And even if they did run rampart , they'd only cause trouble in America and not in say, Australia. So .. what do u think??

Gozer, yes, they did save the world. After all, don't forget-it took FOUR unliscenced nuclear accelerators to take Gozer out, and not just a buncha bullets and missles, and don't forget, too, that as an ancient god coming back from the brink Gozer could probably take on a lot more than expected. Besides, the military would have to level off New York to keep Gozer from hurting.
Vigo is a bit easier to contain, but the fact he rose and can possess people helps. He could possess Ray, he could possess the Curator, he could possibly possess...*checks the presidency of '89* Bush! And someone re-rising like he did could probably command thousands of scared people.
Both could probably go wreacking havoc and only gain more strength and followers as they went around a world tour.

This is a preternatural menace... the army couyld never solve that problem.

The Army could easily take out Stay Puft .. cos he's highly flammable .. but yeah I suppose Vigo would be interesting .. someone would find a way around it though, technology was high even back in '89.

No, they couldn't take out staypuft. Fire didn't hurt him at all. He just used it to his advantage. It took the distruction of gozer to destroy him.

Gozer was Staypuft... it was another form, and I'm pretty sure that as soon as Stay Puft got "destroyed" Gozer would have chosen another form. When they crossed the steams they blew up the dimension GOzer came from and the energy that flowed from it.

Yeah I agree with Sinister, they had to reverse the dimensional opening. Crossing the streams can stop all life as you know it instantaneously and make every molecule in your body explode at the speed of light whereas the army would "blow him up." Which would you prefer?

I also agree with Sinister the Boys in Grey didnt actually "destroy" Gozer, they only shut the door on em. They swung the door shut and honestly I dont think that they could have "destroyed" a god, but thank god for brains. I think that Stay Puft was only the begining. I think Gozer would have used everyones worst fears and brought them to life even if they "destroyed" the Stay Puft Form there still would be Gozer to create the destructor.
Now with Vigo he was a magician a man of power and wisdom. The only reason that he didnt have his full power was that it was his soul that was there. Just a mear image of him. If he had been reincarnated in Oscar he would have been much more powerful( they even said that).

The gateway theory is correct with Gozer/Stay-Puft, but is also true with Vigo. Keep in mind to temporarily contain the essensce of Vigo within Ray, they used the positively charged slime, and then needed to destroy the gateway in the painting. Now the way you go about destroying the gateway is another thing, I don't know if you needed particle throwers for the painting. . .the world was saved in GB1, and NYC possibly North/South America was saved in GB2.

No, they stopped Vigo himself. You can even see when they do the side view, they were hitting him, not the painting.

i think the protons were necesary for the painting, because the positive energy only put him back in it. winston just kept blasting along with them to keep vigo from getting back out while pete and egon destroyed vigo himself, or maybe he had nothing better to do, i can't be sure about that.

They saved the world, if they didn't stop Gozer (and later Vigo) we'd either have a paradox on our hands or Gozer (and maybe other ancient gods) could have taken over the US, then the world.
Therefore the GBs are da men.

Well, with Vigo, his source came from slime, you stick some churchy people in town and let Vigo knows he's loved could kill him.
But remember what Poha said "There are many perks in being the mother of a living god."
But then again, he was killed in 1610, if he possesed Oscar, they could do it again.

Well I tell u what .. all valid points. But hey .. Stay Puft was on fire and i mean, if he's made of soft marshmellow, that means he cooks .. so i maintain that Stay Puft could be burnt to death. Also i agree with the guy's who say that a God couldnt be stopped and that by closing the door on Gozer they effectively stopped it from ever emerging .. they didn't "kill" Gozer. BUT couldn't this mean Gozer could re-appear at a later date ..? If he got into one frige, he could get into another fridge. I'll bet theres more supernatural conductors than Dana's appartment building .. which Gozer could use to come back at a later date.

Well who's to say if Stay puft beat the ghostbusters if Gozer would not have changed into an even more menacing form. And Vigo, He sounded like his intentions were purely about ruling the world. They only say it multiple times in the flick. So yeah, I would have to say the GB's are saviors of the world.
