Antimatter in proton packs?

When the GBs capture the Sedgewick Hotel's class five, Venkman quips "Maybe now you'll never slime a guy with a positron collider!"
This remark seems to imply that the proton packs use antimatter, possibly in the cyclotron ("Each of us is wearing an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back" - Ray).
The term "positron collider" makes it appear that the cyclotron is being used to liberate energy by the mutual annihilation of positively-charged antiparticles (the positron is the antimatter coutnerpart of the electron), as opposed to its regular use in colliding atoms with no overall charge.
However, this brings up a few points:
1) Where would Egon get antimatter?
2) Where in the pack would it be stored?
3) Where would the pack draw the colossal amount of energy necessary to contain antimatter, not to mention to force two positively-charged particles together?
And... would it not be easier to use regular particle collisions, or is there perhaps some special property of position annihilation that makes it uniquely suitable to generate proton streams? (Which in itself could be another can of worms to open, since protons are also positively charged matter - where are they coming from, if the cyclotron is generating energy in some form from positrons?)
Get scratching your heads, guys... I think we'll have to pull an all-nighter. Janine, make some coffee...

Wow, you really know your stuff Smokingtrap, another reason why Brits were some of the best engineers.
You raise some intresting points about the Pack, though I'm not the type of person who would know if that would work, but I think it's a very intresting idea, someone else with thoughts on this?

You do realize if anyone knew how these things worked, someone would have built one already.
Although that person could be you. Anyone who knows what he's talking about want to help?

All I can say is...it's a Venkman quip. We may thus be taking it far too literally.

I'm fairly certain it's a positron glider and you're leaving out the "Why worry? Each one of us is wearing an unliscensed nuclear accelerator on it's back." This proves that there is more likely nuclear material in the packs. The half-life of 5000 years qoute gives you the idea of the break down of nuclear material over time. Good theory though.

Interesting, so far.
"Nuclear accelerator" can be interpreted in two ways, to my way of thinking... either it accelerates nuclear (as in radioactive) material, or atomic nuclei (plural of nucleus).
See, if memory serves, "nuclear" is an adjective. Things related to radioactive materials often get tagged "nuclear" in relation to the unstable atomic nuclei.
I chose to interpret it in the second sense.
Of course, Ghostbusters isn't quite "Star Trek: The Next Generation". There's no strict technical guidelines, so perhaps it was just a throwaway line because it sounded good.
At least I stirred up some debate, huh?
Any more theories..?

Huh. You see, I had been under the impression that the proton streams were highly concentrated streams of protons. Of course, my theory was that if the streams collided, the energy would be enough to produce antimatter, thus leading to the explosion from crossing the streams. I'm just talking out of my butt, though.

Whew! That went right over my head, lol. Which is why I'm an English & Sociology major with a minor in Film and not a Science major, lol. I could barely pass my science Gen Ed's as it is. Anyway, my opinion on it this topic? It's a movie! There as just somethings you have to suspend your disbelief of when it comes to films and not fixate too much on thinking about it. Just my opinion though.

That's true.
I was always fascinated by science, especially physics, through high school - although I was never very good at it. Nowadays, I'm lining up for late entry to university to study English, with a minor in Writing Studies...
I'm not overly technical. I'm just recovering from being a Trek engineering geek, and had an idle moment thinking too hard about one line.
Please forgive me

Well let's put it this way... Peter knows nothing about the equipment. He isn't a real scientist he just got Egon to do all of his homework. I really, have no idea where on earth antimatter is accessible nor do I have any idea of what it is, looks like, or does. But somehow I doubt Egon had any access to it or had any use for it. And chances are he would have used other reactive substances that would be easier to get. And that is saying that maybe antimatter does break down over time.
