What were the lasers for

Ok, put simply:
Ghosts: Extreme negative charge
Proton Beam: Pure positive charge.
If we think of ghosts as a magnet block (such as those used in science lessons at school) The ghosts are the south (negative) end, and the Proton packs are the north (positive) end. As we know when you put north and south together they attract. The same thing happens with the packs and ghosts, the two charges attract each other and they merge.
If the laser grid around the inside of the ECU (which IS a large trap) were positive like the proton beams, the ghosts would merge with the beam, and possibly be able to escape in the same way they occasionally escape the streams. However, if the grid lasers were negatively charged (electrons) a south on south effect would happen. As the ghost approached the edge of the ECU it would be propelled backwards due to the shared charge, just as it would should you put two south magnets together.
So in conclusion the ECU has a box laser grid inside it with a negative charge that makes sure the ghosts are kept inside due to the fact that they can't break through it.

Cheers mate. This also happens with the trap... after the positive energy pyramid draws the ghost in and the doors close, the same negetive grid surrounds the inside of the trap.

Ah right I understand what you are saying its just I didn't know they could escape from the proton stream 
But how does an optical thing like a Laser affect a electrical or magnetic thing like a ghost, lasers don't affect magnets so how do they affect the ghost?
I have heard of a type of laser that is solid and can move things could this have something to do with it?

Theyre not magnetic, but the charge rules are pretty universal... opposites attract, similar repels. The ghosts can only escape the proton beams if they struggle enough, and if that happened within the ECU... well... boom! And a laser is just energy really and therefore the right type of energy can do whatever you need.

Ok so negitive light can repel ghosts, interesting, but why not negitive electricty, or just normal light rather than lasers?

I think I just worked it out,
If they used an electricly charged grid the heat would damage it over time or it might overheat, it could be used for the trap because it only holds them for a few hours and could be fixed when not in use.
But with the Lasers, isn't there something about photons being small pactets of magnitism or something, that would affect the ghost, so if they set them to the same frequency as the ghost it would affect them.
What do you think?

Thanks Sinister, you were very helpfull, just one thinh, this electron gun http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question694.htm would that count as a laser, if so it could be what they were using.
