Then why does Egon read Tobin's Spirit guide and other books on the supernatural? Hypothetical question.

I think it means Egon likes to get his info off of large comp databases or files. Hence the use of Occult Net in GB2.

Or maybe he was referring to the changing trend from the printed word to computerized. A little foreshadowing to where we are today.

I'm with StayinPuff on this one. Janine does ask him if he enjoys reading before he says "Print is dead." By the way, that's one of my favorite lines in the movie

I never thought of that sequence in that light . I always thought that Egon was hooking up a printer that wasn't working("print is dead"). Interesting.

Yeah, I just took it as all the information he wanted, or things he likes to read are all old and nothing new is of importance.

I don't care what the DVD subtitles say - subtitles are wrong all the time.
It's definately "printer's dead" because:
1) He's hooking up a printer - what the hell else could he be doing down there?
2) Egon's the book worm of the group - why would he say that?
3) This is 1984 - CD-ROMs, Internet etc was yet to emerge.
4) Janine says "that's very fascinating to me" and then continues to "I like to read a lot myself" meaning Egon mentioned the printer to change the subject (he didn't want to admit they had something in common), Janine quickly acknowledges that and then changes the subject back again - it's a joke.
5) I'm always right.

RunDMC, you are wrong. The line is "Print is dead". Check the script: http://www.okemosweb.com/ghostbusters/script/
To respond to your reasons:
1) What does that have to do with anything? He may very well be hooking up a printer, but regardless, he was responding to Janine's question. Why would he say, "Printer's dead."?
2) That's the joke. Janine and the audiance expects Egon, the egghead, to respond positively to her question. Instead, he delivers the blunt line "Print is dead".
3) The internet and storage mediums were both around in 1984, but I doubt that that line is a reference to the rise of computers. It is merely making a joke at the stereotype that smart people are bookworms.
4) She says "That's very fascinating", because she is ignoring the fact that Egon not only dislikes reading, but feels that it is dead. She was trying to find common interests that he had. In other words, she was flirting with him.
5) Not in this case .

I always figured Egon meant present print was dead. I mean look at the magazine Janine was reading. Why would he read that?
