What actually happens when you cross streams?

In the movie and RGB cartoon what happens is something called total protonic reversal.
In EGB however Egon just summarizes it as nuclear explosion.
So which is it?
Or is Total Protonic Reversal = Nuclear Explosion?
If so, how is it that the city of New York can still be standing after the OGB crossed streams in the first movie?

Well, EGB doesn`t count..they said that as to not confuse the newcomers....
really, what happens in the movie is just a huge explosion (not nuclear) but big nonetheless...

Damnit, why didn't Egon just say BIG Explosion in Egb then.
*sigh*
Despite what other members think, I still find EGb to be reasonably good. Unless you want to nitpick on continuity then it sucks bad.

This topic prolly should've been under the "General Ghostbusters" thread since this thread is about the paranormal.
In reality, I believe that a proton stream blending with another like stream would only intensify its use, not create a 'reversal' in which case you'd have to have some sort of neutron activity to negate the protons. So, it was really for dramatic effect, I'm sure.
But, since it wasn't anything that is based on reality and wouldn't happen anyways, there's no need to worry.

Here's my explanation:
-Total Protonic Reversal - All life as we know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
-Nuclear Explosion - All life as we know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
So you see, they're one and the same. Oh and New York is still standing because the explosion occurred in another dimension. See the GBs fired their proton guns through the door, which resulted in an explosion. However, we only felt the shockwave in this dimension, as the door was closed by the explosion.

Hey, that's pretty cool!  They crossed the streams into the interdimensional gateway, which caused the explosion, which closed the interdimensional gateway, and so like what he said, in this dimension (Earth, the world of the living.) we just felt the shockwave. Plus, the good thing was that everyone got free marshmellow syrup!
As for EGB, they seemed to have made waaaaaaay too many errors in continuity. I can't stand errors in continuity, most of the time (But sometimes they're good. In other Movies and T.V. shows, anyways.  ). They should've payed more attention to the movies and RGB.

Well, here's my theory about what's going on. Okay, it's a proton stream, and so that seems to me to suggest a stream of protons (perhaps I'm reading too much into this, but whatever). Going from that, two streams of protons traveling at nearly the speed of light (thanks to the nuclear accelerators on their backs), slamming into each other, would have a tendency to produce antimatter, which of course explodes on contact with ordinary matter. Now, this is all speculation, and I've simplified it a bit, but that's my best guess. Also, there's the wording, "total protonic reversal" which would seem to suggest the creation of antiprotons. That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.

Well since they actually cross the streams at the end of the movie we know exactly what it does. It creates that big "fireball" (or energy ball) that travels along the streams and into the other dimension.
As it travels along the stream I'm certain that crossing the streams actually won't cause any harm to the GBs (of course, who would have been willing to test it?). It'll probably cause a hell of a lot of destruction to wherever the streams are pointing but, as far as the GBs are concerened, the more damage the better.

You have to consider something here, When the guys cross the streams on the rooftop they are shooting into a DIMENSIONAL GATEWAY. We have no idea how this could alter the true effect of crossing the streams.
Judging by what Ray said "Total Proton Reversal" I think the streams revert back on themselves when crossed.

No but the energy ball occurred at the point where the Ghostbusters actually crossed the streams, not in the portal. They crossed them as close to themselves as they could so the other dimension had nothing to do with it.

I never thought it to be an explosion. I imagine your brains would implode(the people crossing the streams)and that all hell would break loose causing all of us to have a neverending hangnail and that annoying neighbor who constantly comes over to mooch off of you until you can stand it no longer. Also crossing the streams may result in a neverending cycle of people feeling the need to break it down now(music plays). explosions.........that's crazy talk. see you later, muchachos.....
