I was in my steamy living room in Buffalo, watching CNN Headline News, when the ticker under teh screen announced WHO BASSIST DIES. I was flabbergasted! I shreiked "What?!" I spent the rest of the night in shock. The next day, newspapers, TV, radio, and the Inertnet had stories about John! It was horrible! That night I sat on my stoop, lit a candle and intensely prayed for what was left of the Who.
I was proud to have attended that concert in MSG August 1, 2002! The best comfort I could give the two remaining members!
LONG LIVE THE OX!

Hey Sadie- I was over at a friend's house. I had been out all afternoon cutting grass and went over to his place to swim. We were hanging out in the basement and a friend called, and said another friend had called him to say John had died. I figured they didn't know what they were talking about- like someone from the Guess Who had died or something. But after a few minutes on CNN, the John thing came up. I dropped the phone and started crying in front of my friends. What an awful day...

He was the bassist of The Who. He died last year of a cocaine overdose.
Well, I'm a bassist myself. I think I read it online that he died. Not too shortly after, another bassist, Ray Brown, died. I find thier deaths sad, and even more so that people don't know who John is.

It was big national news almost a year ago ( one year in about 3 days.) It was all over CNN, newspapers, the web- I can't believe you hadn't heard. And it's sad you guys don't know who he was. Quite simply, he was the greatest bassist to ever live. He had a very unconventional playing style- using four fingers to play, and at such a staggering speed. He played the bass like a lead instrument and was just incredible. Go download "The Real Me" by The Who if you want to here some serious bass. And about not knowing who John was- I've heard worse. When George Harrison died a girl in one of my HS classes asked who he was. I had a buddy in there who was a big Beatles fan- a musician who was heavily influeced by the Beatles, the White Album in particular- and he flipped out on her. BTW, Sadie, I'll be busting out Quadrophenia on the 1 year anniversary. It's still hard to believe it's been a year...

Same story as Emily (Bluto) for me. I was at home, I had just gotten my new issue of Bass Player Magazine, and I read about it there. Sad times. Right away I went and re-learned the bass solo in "My Generation".
And Ray too, wow, what a loss. Myself and my pianist friend absolutely adore Oscar's and Ray's work, (he actually had met Oscar twice, he gave him some lessons), and there's a low feeling every time we listen to their work.
