okay, you got your equipment in a dark, run down old house resembling something out of a halloween special. of course you may get scared. but then on a bright sunny day on a crowded street you hold up your EFM at the front door of the local quality inn and it goes nuts. my point/question is why are most so afraid of the unknown? you can fear nothing then everything at the same time. Whats with that? (this ones a thinker)
im gone.

Pre-conceptions is one of them. There are so many horror films about haunted houses, and so few about crowded streets in the day!
We also tend to feel safer with others around, either the bad thing will happen to them or they can help if it happens to you. Farkness is another key factor as it li8mits vision, and we end up scaring ourself into thinking there is something horrible there when tehre isn't, whereas in a brightly lit street that cannot happen.

why do we fear the unknown? simple... because we fear what do we not understand or cannot see... same reason some fear the dark, you cant see whats lurking in the shadows, sure theres probably nothing there but you cant confirm it 100% with your eyes so the thought lingers in your brain. basic human response.

It's all more a part of your psyche. You can clear you mind and be okay with the dark freaky places, or you can let Hollywood take its toll on you and spook you good.
I can remember one time when I thought I saw (this is SO stupid) Freddy Kreuger in the dark--albeit this was long, long ago. Still, I knew he was only Hollywood and I let it scare me.
When testing someone to see if they can hang with investigations of the paranormal, there's this huge spooky house with a deep front porch and two big wooden doors that looks like a dark passage way. I have them start walking from the street, stop ever so often and, after bringing up some Hollywood horror flick, have them tell me what they see, think, and feel. The further away from it they are they don't mind turning their back to the 'void', but the closer they get, the less they turn away.
I then tell them to go to the dark passage, which is when they find out it's two big black wooden doors! I explain to them that just as they controlled their brains to re-hash those fearful items from movies, they can control their fears of the dark.
It's a good psychological experiment, too.
By the way, only a few folks were very brave to stick with it, including a biker dyke who is the bravest, most intelligent woman I've ever seen!! She's the one I send into the dark first--infrared goggles or not! LOL!!

I love horror movies and only a small coincidence directly after one would just startle me. That's diffrent from knowing something's following you down the street and you're the only one going down it in broad daylight or being alone in a house and feeling as if something was looking at you and you're looking where it's supposed to be and see jack.
I think if I ever saw a ghost that was just there and I knew it, I'd probably melt the rubber on my sneakers beating a path away from it. I doubt I'd get enough courage to say 'Could you fix yourself up?'
BTW- I always loved hearing about Ghosts ever since I know of and when I was digging through my late Aunt's attic as a kid, I found an old library book about ghosts and pretty much gave myself a good frieght reading about Borly Rectory and Elke Sommer's haunted hause that burned down mysteriously. I was a skeptic till I started having some experiances myself.
