Ghosts don't exist! 
If this is too off topic, then I apologise, but according to scientists, ghosts officially don't exist.
They believe (and this is a rather sloppy answer) that ghosts are probably, probably caused by drafts, dim lighting, vivid imaginations and electromagnetic fields.

I heard! It's ridiculous! I know what I've seen! My parents know what they saw! And I'll b darned if I believe what some scientists say! Ghosts are mroe than science!

SCIENS DOES KNOW ABOUT GHOSTS!
one of einstiens theories stated that energy cannot be destroyed, it simply changes form... AND the electric energy in your brains cannot be destroyed.. so when you die.. it simply changes form into a "ghost" or w/e you wish to believe... but YES ghosts DO exist.. the ones you seen, are just skeptics. PLUS THEY HAVE GOVERNMENT CERTIFICATION ABOUT THE MOST HAUNTED PLACES!! so 5the government must believe...

Science can be useful, but in no way does it reveal all! The fact is Ghosts and demons are otherworldly... and science cannot understand it all.

Scientists often say "that's impossible" followed (ten years later) by "well ok, we were wrong.. that actually IS possible.. BUT THIS.. this right here... that's not possible".

I honestly don't believe in ghosts, only in demons. That might account for some of my lack of respect of this board (the board, not the members  ).

Kingpin you have been watching too much newsround, am i right But i'd have to say that i do believe in Ghost's. I mean how do you explain things being moved around for no appariante reason?

Sorry chief I know what I have seen, and it wasnt caused by dim lighting or drafts... I guess people like kingpin need to actually get into the field before they can make such judgments.

The mind gives off various energy waves, and an incredible amount of electrons.
I say that a real "ghost" is a carbon copy of the deceased by a spike in mental energy levels as the brain shorts out. Those who die tragically might have had an adrenaline surge, amplifying the output of synaptic energy.
This energy will linger, and feed off of ambient "psychic" energy. It is also not impossible to believe that an energy can develop its own A.I. After all, our thoughts are all just energy impulses.
ever notice that haunting patters are cyclical? A standard "ghost" would be constantly repeating the last things it did in life, as that is all the energy "knows."
Demons are quite capable of producing the "ghost" phenomena, and many hauntings can easily be classified as demonic activity.
Anyhoo...I refuse to believe that ghosts are the true souls of the dead, while it makes great fiction (as in Ghostbusters), it is contradictory to my religion as a whole.
That was a short version of a thesis I wrote on the existence of ghosts, that I am keeping when I take on a Metaphysics degree. I want to see the world of the paranormal from the view of a Christian.
That's my take on this issue...ghosts exist, but not as everyone knows them.
Congratulations, Dr_P_Venkman, you hit the nail on the head. The soul, however, is NOT an "energy," it goes beyond all forces the material universe can explain. Only God can, and he hasn't seen fit to reveal that.

You are dead correct. True Science CANNOT explain everything.
That's why there is the fields of theoretical science, Metaphysics and Philosophy.

not everything can be explained by science or facts. Some things have no way of being explained and it's just comes down to the question of what a particular person believes in. Science will never have all of the answers. Some things just have to be left for faith to decide.
