After seeing GB1 about a million times, more and more I'm thinkin' that Ecto 1 may not have been ambulance to begin with. Before you all go crazy on me just hear me out for a moment. We all know that it wasn't a hearse, but was it really an ambulance? I mean pause the movie at the spot where Ray pulls up to the firehouse in the Caddy for the first time. For starts, it's all flat black with grey primer in spots. Would someone really go through all the trouble of painting an ambulance all black? I wouldn't and I know for certain there never was a black ambulance. Instead I believe that Ecto 1 was originally the coroner's car. That would make sense wouldn't it? I mean it hauls dead bodies to the morgue, the Ghostbusters catch the dead, it makes sense. Ray probably purchased it from the city auction (A la the Bluesmobile). Too bad they didn't get into more detail on the origins of our favorite Cadillac in the movie. I don't know, I think it looks more like a coroner's car than an ambulance, what do you guys think?

I have a few theories that I believe contradict that idea.
Firstly, Ecto-1 in it's black form had a red siren light, coroner vans have yellow siren lights.
Secondly, I don't believe Caddilac made specific coroner vans, only ambulances, hearses and the standard Eldorados.
Thirdly, the Ecto-1 in it's black form had windows, most coroner vans don't have windows in the rear of the vehicle due to the coroner not wanting people seeing the body.
Fourthly, the Ecto-1 didn't have to have been in use as an ambulance when Ray bought it, would a hospital use an ambulance that out of date and in terrible state of repair? My theory is like in 6 Feet Under with the girl owning the old hearse as a 'car', The Ecto-1 was painted black for private use, and then purchased by Ray for their own private use.
But again, those are simply theories.

~First Ecto1 and 1a was a combination which means its an Ambulance/Hearse.
~Second I think it was a diffrent color when the studio got it and they paint it black for Dan b/c he couldnt get his idea for an black Ecto on screen so they painted that black for him.
~The black car is way diffrent then the white version. Yes its still an MM and a combination but theres some diffrences like a strip that runs along the car, two there 2 mirrors on the car not on the white, and three the stobe lights are missing on the grill.
Now you may ask your self how i know this well im making the black car out of the Polor Lights model and me and my dad have studied the film and also we seen 1a up close and we study that also.

God you people... A 1959 Cadillac in 1984 was still a freaking old car... The "black" car Rays pulls up in is just primered, it's not painted black, its primer! It was probably hauled out of the junkyard, had the rust sanded down and then painted the flat black so it covered all the bare metal, and when somebody bought it and painted it it wouldn't look like crap...

Well now, finally a car guy steps on up. And River, why the hell would the black car have strobes in the grille? They put those in for Ecto-1.
