It's not me! But I just came across this article on the American Family Association website. I couldn't help but laugh at this person's response to the entertainment industry.
Here's the part about Ghostbusters:
A few years ago, when my older daughter came home from college for the holidays, she was watching a funny movie on the television. Ghostbusters was a fairly innocent comedy about eliminating ghosts and demons that were causing New York City grief. After a few minutes, she reminded me that it didn?t fit in our family guidelines when it first came out. ?That?s funny, Dad. Why wouldn?t you allow us to watch this when it was in the theaters? There?s nothing wrong with this,? she asked.
My response was simple, ?It?s a movie about demons and demon possession. Have you forgotten that when that movie first came out you were nine ? not nineteen? It was my job as your father to protect your mind. I didn?t believe then nor do I now that demons, no matter how ?funny? are appropriate for a nine-year-old. You now have the freedom to make your own decisions, but when you were a little girl, you didn?t know the difference between what was good and bad. And we had to help you find the standard. All you cared about was if your friends liked it. Was it funny? Was it exciting? Did it have cute boys in it? ?
And you can read the full article here.

His response begs the question 'When is the appropriate age to teach your children about evil?' Does this mean that up to that point, his kids had no concept of bad? How do you teach right from wrong..good from bad, without addressing bad issues? I think it would have been appropriate to show such kids how good can conquer evil, whatever form it takes. But then again, I AM just a guy with 4 teenagers now, what do I know?

My family is kind of religious (Catholic even!) but we were still allowed Ghostbusters.
Infact I don't recall anything being censored or banned.

WHAT!?
That's insane! My Parents let me watch that when they taped back in '87, and I was only one year old! Of course, that was the ABC version, so some editing had been done to it.
BTW, we (My Family and I.) are Christians. And We're forever PROUD of it. I've never met any Christians who saw the movie, and disapproved of it, either. All of the Christians who I know that have seen the Movie, loved it! Of course, only a loser wouldn't love Ghostbusters!

They don’t just call them The Real Ghostbusters for no reason! Take a look at Take Two, Citizen Ghost, The Ghostbusters Omnibus Timeline, THE GHOSTBUSTERS FACT LIST, and RGB Truly Canon with the Movies?, and you’ll see why!

That is when religion takes a turn for the crazy. When you start to interpret things like Ghostbusters being detrimental. If there is any way that the Ghostbusters could be detrimental other than giving you a scare in the whole armchair scene, then your reading too much into it. I dont know what to say about this other than those types of people are very frustrating.

I come from a VERY christian family background BUT - I was brought up on Ghostbusters, Metallica, Transformers, Bob Marley, Doctor Who (of course) and lots of other things many christians I have known over the years regard as "evil" or "of Satan". I don't want to sound big-headed or anything, but I can say I'm the one that's stuck to my values. That's unlike many hypocritical christians and ex-christians I know who didn't watch Ghostbusters or listen to Metalllica because they were, apparently, demonic. All the people I know whose parents were like that have gone down, what I believe, is a terrible track, including taking drugs (or at least crazy amounts of alcohol) and sleeping around. Strange isn't it, what it can do to people when faith is turned into a set of strict rules and regulations (eg: don't watch Ghostbusters or Satan'll come and possess you). I not saying that it always happens like that - it's just been that way for the folk I know. Sorry if I sound annoyed - but I still have christian friends telling me not to listen to Metallica. Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

This reminds of the time when ninja was considered a bad word in England. The Ninja Turtles had be renamed the Teenge Mutant Hero Turtles. Ghostbusters is about freeing the world from evil. That's all. It's a movie of good vs evil. Most movies are based on that idea. Even Disney movies have that premise. Ghostbusters aren't bad. The only time GB or anything similar can be considered bad for a child or person to watch is someone who doesn't understand what is good and what is evil. Someone who has a bad perception on what is real and make believe.
